Please can anyone help? I have recently been researching a 2xg.uncle, Charles Post Grant, who had been a lieutenant in the Cambridge University Rifles up until his graduation in 1877. There was then a blank until he started as a solicitor in London in 1881. However, I found a record on Ancestry which possibly links him to Ferreira's Horse - Cpl Charles P Grant serving from 1877-79 - which was backed up by two documents on this website referring to Cpl Charles and Cpl C Grant . Does anyone know whether there exists any documentation regarding the recruitment or service of members of this group of soldiers, so that I might be able to check that this is indeed my man? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Hi John Checking the ' South African War Medal 1877-78-79 The Medal Roll ' by D.R.Forsyth listed on the roll for Ferreira's Horse is a Cpl C.P.Grant who was entitled to the Medal with Clasp 1879 . Looking in Terry Sole's excellent book ' For God Queen and Colony ' in the Ferreira Horse Roll , Grant is listed as Cpl Charles P Grant , Ferriera's Horse was with No 5 Column which was Commanded by Col Hugh Rowlands VC ( Nov 5th 1854 Crimean War ) , Rowlands and the F. Horse also took part in the aborted attack on Sekukuni in 1878 ,( lack of water , forced to withdraw ) they also took part in Capturing Sekukuni's Stronghold in Nov 79. Hope that helps a bit ? . 90th

There was a post about Ferreira's Horse some years ago but it seems to have disappeared? The South African Military History website states that Ferreira'a Horse had been transferred into Wood's Column and Smith Dorrien mentions them as serving under Buller at Ulundi. They did also take part in the capture of Sekukuni's Mountain.
