PostSubject: How to obtain Service History of recipients in the 58th Foot   How to obtain Service History of recipients in the 58th Foot EmptyTue Oct 08, 2019 1:57 pm

Hello,
I am trying to obtain the Service history papers of several recipients that served in the 58th Foot during the Zulu War. What would make them more interesting is if they came from Rutlandshire. Is there is someone who could guide me in the right direction to obtaining this type of information. The names of those that I am interested in are as follows:

29/962. Pte. J. Remnant. 58th Foot

29/1750. Pte. G. Brooks. 58th Foot

29/2176. Pte. G. Maxim. 58th Foot

29/1074. Pte. T. Wood. 58th Foot

There is limited information I can find on the internet, such as the medal rolls on ancestry.

Just to say, this is a great site, and I will carry on going through the topics and add to if I can.

Hi Fred

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

I can help with three of the names you have posted and I have a issue with the fourth.

Now for Maxim, I do not think that name is correct but can not make it out as of yet.

Hi Fred

Here is one for you to get your teeth into.

Listed on D.R. Forsyth Medal Roll as 29B/702 Matchin G.

Now you will see below his name is George Machin and he does come from Rutlandshire.

PostSubject: Re: How to obtain Service History of recipients in the 58th Foot   How to obtain Service History of recipients in the 58th Foot EmptyWed Oct 09, 2019 10:47 am

Hello again Andy,
Thank you for the attestation papers, they are a great help with my researching. I would love to know where to find them, if they are on the internet !

I was under the impression most recipients of the 58th Foot were in Rutlandshire/Leicestershire/Lincolnshire area. The attestation papers to Machin are interesting too, thank you, I will look into him further.

I have noted the snap shot of the 29/2176. Pte. G. Maxim 58th Foot. Entitled to and with bar “1879”. This is from the original roll W100 / 47. page 286. Forsyth's book and his medal both list him as “Maxim”. I would add photos, but I do not know how to.
So you think it may be a spelling mistake. That's interesting. Would there be any other forms of paper work that we could refer to I wonder. What papers would they refer to when naming his medal.

It's a Great start.

Fred

Hi Fred

It is only my opinion that Maxim is spelt incorrectly. If you have or seen this medal and his name is spelt Maxim, then I will take that as being correct.

I have also sent you a PM.

As the rest of these chaps are 18 years old +/- a few months when they attested, I am going to assume Maxim is about the same age. So far I have found 3-4 possibilities to check out.
Yes, I do have the medals.

Fred

Hi Fred

The above three were all part of the drafts after Isandlwana which were then sent out to South Africa. So I would say the 58th Regiment were under strength before Isandlwana and needed volunteers to fill their ranks. Volunteers would have come from anywhere and from many different regiment.

Fredk,

Ken Lovell’s book is fairly scarce.

As an alternative I would recommend the online London Gazette, I used it recently for the casualties of Laing’s Nek, 28th January 1881.  I know Ken used the published version as one of his sources.

John,

This reminds me of a visit I made to Fort Northampton, many years ago. I was greeted with the comment we do not see many white visitors here.  A bit off the beaten track I must admit, but we must remember 58th Foot.

JY,
Ken Lovell's book is very scarce. Found one in South Africa Auction - too late, another of ebay - too late.
I have just discovered, The British Library - They can digitise the book for £57.50. However, due to copy right, you can not print it.
My search skills with The London Gazette are some what rubbish. I have carried out a search, no results found. I will be trying again in due course.

Hi Fred,

I've just come across this thread as I'm conducting my own list of 1st Boer War combat and non-combat casualties. None of the men listed above (Remnant, Brooks, Maxim, Wood) were casualties, and are thus not listed in Lovell/Prior.
