| Good morning all, while I find myself in isolation in france ( came here for a few weeks on march 10th) I watched the film Zulu yesterday afternoon as it was being shown on sky movie greats, I noticed that colour sargeant bourne wore two medals, I just wondered what the medals were? Anybody have an idea....

The 2nd medal has an Ashantee (1874) ribbon. No idea what the 1st medal is. At the time of Rorke's Drift, Colour Sergeant Bourne had no medals. |

| Hi Kenny, thank you for your reply, having been reading on this forum for a while now when I watched the film it was cringeworthy stuff watching all the historical inaccuracies, and I guess it's no surprise that they pinned medals on colour seargent bourne when he didn't have any prior to the action at rorkes drift....once again many thanks

| I have not viewed the film for a couple of months, but from memory Col Sgt Bourne is wearing a Indian Army Temperance Medal next to the Ashantee Medal. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

The problem is that many of the followers of the AZW, think that the move ‘Zulu’ ought to be the real thing. However it is an entertaining drama - designed to make money - it achieved that and has been high in the popularity charts since is was made in 1964. It is worth reading Sheldon Hall’s book - Zulu With some guts behind it - about the making of the film. However, in my mind there is no substitute than going to Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana, walking the ground, and appreciating first hand what took place in 1879. Go where history was made! |

| Hi Kenny, I quite agree with you, I really do want to visit the battlefields but I want an experienced and knowledgeable guide some of the costs of the lodging etc are way up there in price so I just look for recommendations and internet searches for the best deals |
