| Catiline63,
That is a good list which you have put together. I found only one name, "Jack (Jim) Dough, which I would question.
Jack (Jim) Dough (Krooman, HMS Active) was a native of Sierra Leone. The Medal Roll shows he was Discharged Dead on 2 March 1879. Dough’s name was not listed on the HMS Active Memorial at Victoria Park, nor is there an entry on the ship’s Medical Journal (by Staff Surgeon F. Norbury) for him.
On 2 March 1879 Krooman Jack Dough was not serving ashore with the Naval Brigade from HMS Active which was besieged at Eshowe on that date, nor is he listed among those who died and were buried in the cemetery there. Dough had served ashore with the Naval Brigade in the 9th Cape Frontier wars (16 December 1877 to 31 March 1878.) for which he was entitled to the South Africa Medal with the “1877-8” clasp. On the 2nd of March he was either serving aboard HMS Active anchored off of Port Durban, or could have been sent ashore to a hospital at either Durban or Simon’s Bay. I have not been able to find any Medical Journal kept by Surgeon John B. B. Triggs who was the only Surgeon aboard ship at the time. The only other source would be the ship’s log for HMS Active which is kept at the National Archives in the file ADM 53/11119 which covers the period 23 August 1878 to 25 October 1879.

| Thanks for the advice, Tom. Much appreciated. I retained Dough because, as he seems to me to be a 'borderline' character - part of the compliment of the Active, although not part of the shore party that made up the Naval Brigade - it would be incomplete not to include him!
Thanks again, Lee |

| Neither of these men saw service in the Zulu War.
Lieutenant Henry Bingham Chesshyre Wynyard was appointed to HMS Boadicea 7 June 1879 and arrived at Simon’s Bay 7 July where he was put on the sick list of “Boadicea” the next day and sent to the naval hospital at Simon’s Town. He never saw service aboard ship in Natal or Zululand waters, nor does he show up on the medal roll. HMS Boadicea had left Durban in June with the body of the Prince Imperial and arrived at Simon’s Bay on the 15th where the Prince’s body was transferred to HMS Orontes. The “Boadicea” remained thee at Simon’s Bay for the remainder of the war.
Stoker John McCarthy died in 1884. The crew of “Boadicea” that served in the Zulu War and the 1st Boer War were sent back to England in 1882 aboard HMS Thalia which had brought out their replacements. There is no Stoker John McCarthy on the medal roll for service in the Zulu War.

| There are a number of other graves in the Burial Ground, unfortunatly its a very isolated place and in SA that presents its own problems. |
