| Smoko,
He might be a decent researcher on matters rugby union, I have only had a quick scan of the book, and in my opinion it appears to be disappointing. I have spotted some major errors but that’s just me. I will let you draw your own conclusions, but don’t expect any startling revelations.

| Gary,
Fortunately the Ashes series is being shown on BT Sport which I don’t subscribe to so I am spared the embarrassment.
I am currently working on an officer’s diary which I intend to produce as a book, with introductory notes and illustrated to tell his story. More when I am further down the trail.

| Chris Schoeman raises an interesting point on the Battle of Nyezane, 22nd January 1879. Where he places Lieutenant Reginald Hart, Royal Engineers, in that action, rather than his brother, Captain Arthur FitzRoy Hart, 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment.
Given the fact that Reginald Hart was in Afghanistan and a few short days later on 31st January 1879 he would perform an action for which he would be awarded the Victoria Cross.
As I say an interesting point, or simple confusion?

| Gary,
How about the Cape Mounted Rifles being part of No. 5 Column at the start of the campaign?

| Hi Kate,
Well he does mention this forum... Will that do?
From where I’m at so far there is simply nothing that we don’t know.
Certainly lacking in photographs, and those that are there are not correctly acknowledged.
I feel if you removed some of the flowery padding it would be a slim volume.
But these are obviously my own opinions.

| CTSG I've been able to look at a copy of this but do not own one (and shan't be buying it). Like John, I noticed first a number of elementary mistakes and secondly, the fact that the author had no new comment to make on any aspect of the battle despite the recent discoveries of the last few years. |

| As I said riding on the backs of other authors. Can see no point in buying something that contains the same information, and most certainly not if it contains errors. |

| CTSG You might be interested to know that there's actually a term for what you're describing: anaphoric historiography such that it allows future generations of researchers to feed off the (incorrect) secondary-source based writings of this generation and perpetuate its errors. Might be useful for the next pub quiz! |
