| I inherited a number of years ago an 1879 clasped 'South African medal from a distant relative. Interestingly, I have also got 2 pictures of him within his unit. I am currently serving In the forces and have it with my own medals.
All I know is that he is a Gnr W Luckman 4747 of 5th Bde RA.
Out of pure interest I would like to know if anyone has any details or information of him and his actions during this period. |

| Not on the roll of N/5 at the time of Isandhlwana. Must have arrived later to bring the battery up to strength (hence the 1879 clasp and not 1877-8-9). |

| What alot of information and thanks for the time that you have all spent on this. The plot thickens. The 2 x photos that I inherited with the medal are of the time but for LBdr in the first one and Sgts in the second one. They seem like the same cohort. | Great pictures. I'm no uniform expert but they do look a bit late though for a man who left the army in 1889. I would have thought they would have been wearing the home service helmet with ball fixing if the pictures were taken before 1902. I thought the peaked cap was only adopted c1905. I'm sure some one on here will correct me though if I am wrong. Also its difficult to see but are some of them wearing Anglo Boer war medals? Kate |

| I see on the third picture above it says 'grandfather.' I wonder if the great grandfather was issued the SA medal and his son followed him into the battery and is shown in the postcards above. Kate |

| That would seem more likely. But then it also depends on who wrote grandfather? 1879Luckman's father or grandfather?? |
