Hi Littlehand & SD

William Henry Hickin
Born Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire

He was killed in action at the Battle of Isandlwana on 22nd January 1879. He attested on 5th January 1876. He joined 1/24th in South Africa on 2nd August 1877. His effects were claimed by next of kin. Medal and Clasp ‘1877-8-9’. His regimental service number was 25B/747.

In the now derelict church of St John’s, Hanley there is a Memorial Window with the inscription ‘To the glory of God and to the memory of William Henry Hickin 24th Regiment who fell at Isandhlwana South Africa 22nd January 1879 aged 25 years’ (a similar window today (1997) would cost about £16,000). The future of the church is uncertain and the exterior of the window is now bricked-over (information provided by Messrs. K Roy and R Smith.

If anyone has access to these documents, or knows how to get access. There appears to be a newspaper extract and a photo with ref: to Hicken
