| Dear Jon,
The book that you are looking for may well be:
" Blood on the Painted Mountain" ( Zulu Victory and Defeat, Hlobane and Kambula.) by
the late Ron Lock
ISBN 1-85367-201-7."
Kind regards,
Peter Quantrill

| Jon,
As well as Peter’s recommendation, I would suggest The Boiling Cauldron; Utrecht District and the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 by Huw M. Jones.

| Hi Jon84, I've just finished the new book on Hlobane & Khambula by W. B. Bartlett. It's a very good read, and he's writing style is excellent. There maybe a couple of errors, but that's my opinion. This book is so much better than "Blood On The Painted Mountain" by Ron & Peter. "The Boiling Cauldron" is a good read, but it is hard-ish work, but, a good educational book. I would thoroughly recommend this new book. Cheers |

Trying to get quite a few anglo zulu war books in to read before I have surgery as I will have quite alot of spare time to read upon recovery. So any other suggestions in this subject is more than welcome Thanks Jon Thank |

| Hi Jon84, Yes, as mentioned by John Young, W. B. Bartett's new book does contain a mish mash of engravings/photos, which doesn't make much sense, but, like I said, it's a good read. For me, "Blood On The Painted Mountain" was a disappointing read, because there are at least 40-50 pages on Isandlwana, which is far too much, whereas Bartlett does give the reader a brief idea on what happened there and then proceeds with what his book title is about. Anyway, it's refreshing to read a new publication on these two battles, whilst a lot of authors concentrate on Isandlwana & Rorke's Drift. Yes, there are a few errors, but that shouldn't put you off whatsoever. |

| Without blowing my own trumpet (well actually I am a bit, hope thats okay Pete) Rifle and Spear with the Zulu, the biography of Captain Alan Colstoun Gardner 14th Hussars, has chapters on Hlobane and Kambula and contains letters, unpublished anywhere else, written by him about these battles. He was mentioned in despatches by Buller for his actions at Hlobane and severely wounded at Kambula. There are also rare letters from other key players involved. In case you are interested Kate
