| Hi All, Smith's are always difficult, but did find him in the end. Frederick Smith enlisted 31 Dec 1877, age 19 born Mansfield Notts 1858. To 30/1329 1/10 Lincolnshire Regt, transferred to 38/2074 99th, 1 Dec 1878 to South Africa 4 Dec 1878 to 29 Dec 1879, Zulu War, to Bermuda then return to S Africa for 1ST Boer War but arrived to late. Discharged at Devizes 20 Dec 1889, 12 years. Re-enlisted Royal Warwickshire [special Reserve] 7 Jan 1890, served 2nd Boer War 16 Dec 1901 to 10 Sept 1902 discharged 6 Jan 1906. 16 years, total now 28 years. His WW1 service is a bit confusing seems he enlisted 15 Oct 1915 and was discharged 16 Aug 1918 another 3 years service making 31 years with the Colours. He served in France during WW1 with 29th Light Railway Operating Company Royal Engineers, also with the Labour Corps No.301326. The WW1 address is Blue Bell Row Ripley, the 1911 census address is Lowes Hill, Ripley, [i think these are the same addresses as i have seen the whole address elsewhere] his occupation is Scavenger, married to Mary Ann, 2 children including the son J.F. Smith. He married Mary Ann Greenisay 20 July 1891 in Leicester. He probably dies Dec Qtr 1926. |
