| Hi All, By chance i picked this man up in the eGGSA gravestone photographs in South Africa. David Souter Robertson, He died 1883 and is buried in NG Kerk Cemetery Wynberg, Cape Province. The grave states of Layhead Lanarkshire, and Ex Edinburgh City Militia. He was attached to the 2/21st during the Zulu War and is on the Medal Roll. The 1881 census gives a David Souter Robertson born 1863 Edinburgh address Lawhead House Carnwath Lanarkshire a apprentice Engineer. I believe this must be his son. David Souter Robertson appears in two London Gazettes with rank promotions in the Edinburgh City Militia and Queens Regiment of Light Infantry, 10 Jan 1870 to Lieutenant, and 5 May 1875 to Captain. He is also in the 1878 Army List as Capt Queens Reg of L I [Edinburgh]. I missed the date but, Father of the bride D.S. Robertson at St John's Episcopol Church Edinburgh Ann Chaplin Robertson to Captain George Newcombe Stevenson 91st [He also served in the Zulu War] they would have two children, a David Souter Robertson born 1803 [must be our David's Father] appears in the 1871 census address Lawhead House, he also appears on the 1881 census at Murlington House Brechin Forfarshire, also here are two Officers with the surname Chaplin,[daughters middle name] and two grandchildren Ethel and George Stevenson [Stevenson 91st Annie his wife died in 1877 after childbirth]. David Souter Robertson went on the reserve of Officers on 22 Dec 1880 and resigned his commission on either 1st June or 1st October 1881. In Dean Cemetery Edinburgh there is a memorial to Davids wife and daughter [stevenson 91st] that lists both of them. Rai Keynshamlighthorse. |
