First Patients:

The first patients admitted to the Royal Victoria Military Hospital Netley was on the 19 May 1863. The first patients and war casualties arrived by boats and ships to the purpose built 170 metre long pier at Southampton Water. This is how Queen Victoria would arrive for her regular visits to the hospital. During such visits she awarded medals to the soldiers which included three Victoria Crosses. These VCs' were awarded to Private Frederick Hitch of the 24th Regiment in recognition for his bravery at Rorke's Drift (the Zulu War)

PostSubject: Re: Royal Victoria Military Hospital Netley   Royal Victoria Military Hospital Netley EmptyMon 18 Oct 2010 - 5:50

During this period, Henry Cooper Reade was Deputy Inspector General of Army Hospitals. He died in 1873. He is pictured with Queen Victoria in a painting by Jerry Barrett, 1856, visiting wounded soldiers at Bromton Hospital Chatham 3/3/1856. Of the papers mentioned in one of my other posts, not mentioned because he died before the Zulu war, is signed by Henry Cooper Reade, 17 Jan 1871
Similar to the one pictured below, i don't have a pic of Reades one yet but can post later if interested.
Some should know the importance of the paper posted, a Canadian one!
