| Hi Kate/John
Northwest medals.co.uk still has Private John Bye on their roll of casualties, listed as Pte Bye John 308. The Anglozuluwar.com still has him listed.

| Eddie,
Fortunately Pte. John Bye, of 1st/24th does not appear as deceased in They Fell Like Stones - The Battles & Casualties of the Zulu War of 1879.
Obviously neither website appears to have consulted that publication when producing their lists.

| Hi John
Yes, they obviously haven't.
I relation to your earlier post re - J Grenfell being related, I have looked at peerage.com and found that Field Marshal FW Grenfell had three brothers but none having the initial "J":
Pascoe Du Pre Grenfell 4 Jul 1828 - 29 Nov 1896 St Leger Murray Grenfell 1830 - 22 Feb 1860 Arthur Riverdale Grenfell 12 SEP 1831 - 1 Nov 1895
Pascoe Du Pre had nine sons that served in the military, three of which were KIA, but Boer or WWI. One son KIA was Captain Frances Octavius Grenfell VC, 4 SEP 1880 - 24 May 1915.
No details exist of St Leger's children, he died young (30) Arthur never married so it seems F W had a son KIA, Major Hon Arthur Bernard John Grenfell 10th Hussars B 24 Jun 1908 - 23 Jan 1942, age 33. |

| Eddie,
It was “fake news” and my query was actually a pun.
I take it that you are aware that Francis Wallace Grenfell’s claim to fame in the Principality? I have previously corresponded with the 3rd Baron Lord Grenfell with regard to certain aspects of the Zulu War, and his grandfather’s role in it.

| Hi John Never mind at least there's some information for members to read. I know he was made Baron Grenfell of Kilvey, Glamorgan on 15 July 1902 and I know he had the freedom of Swansea in 1889 Grenfell road and Grenfell Tower in London which burnt down is named after him. |

Field Marshal HRH The Prince of Wales KG, &c. King Edward VII. Many Royals assumed the rank. |

| Eddie,
No a Scotsman born in London, despite having a forename Llewelyn - his mother’s maiden name - does not count.
Buckingham Palace - Wales? I’m glad I never went orienteering with you!

| Hi John
I mentioned what was the Prince of Wales at the time.
You only asked for one Welsh Field Marshal. The only others linked to Wales I can think of is Earl Roberts, or South African Field Marshal and Welsh Politician Smuts. |

| Eddie,
A person born in India of Irish heritage, and one born in the Western Cape, South Africa, hardly meet the Welsh qualification - unless they are in your national rugby team.

| Eddie,
To save your suffering I have sent you a pm.
With a father from Waterford, and a mother whose family hailed from Co. Tipperary, Frederick Sleigh Roberts V.C. was born in what then Cawnpore (now Kanpur). Therefore could you please explain to me how he is in your words…the most highly decorated Welshman?

| Hi John
I mistook Roberts for Rowlands.
General Sir Hugh Rowlands VC, KCB, DL. Wales first recipient of the VC, recommended twice but regulations at time prevented it. Crimean & Anglo Zulu war. |
