| Hi All
Did John Warman AHC 2336 take part in the Zulu war of 1879? It is known that he was in the Ashanti war and was in SA July 1879. John joined the 2/16th Regt of foot (Bedford and Hereford) in 1870, age 19. There is a discharge reference in 1878 from the 2nd Bn 60th Regt, for a John Warman Number 2020. This must have been when he transferred to the AHC, as he ended up at Netley hospital as a patient and went on to transfer.
Little background information:
John married Rose young in 1881, he died in 1897.
His father was Edward Warman b.1828 Canterbury, Kent d. 1901. Edward married Ann Wybrow and had 6 Children.
His grandfather was John Marsh Warman 1796 - 1837, he married Harriet Ann Wood 1805 - 1881.
This is a request for information on another site, into what part did John play, if any, in the Zulu war, as he was only in the Cape in 1879 for a couple of months.

| Eddie,
#2336 2nd Corporal John Warman is confirmed on the Medal Roll for the Army Hospital Corps as entitled to the South Africa Medal, without clasp, for service in the Zulu War. At the time the medal roll for the A.H.C. was prepared on 30 October 1880 Warman had been advanced to Corporal.

| Hi POT
Many thanks
It is known he was in SA July and August 1879, any idea as to what role he would have been involved in. |

| Eddie,
I have not come across any specific information on John Warman’s role in the Zulu War. Since he was issued the South Africa Medal without clasp, it would mean he remained somewhere in Natal and did not enter into Zululand.
I do know men of the Army Hospital Corps were stationed at Fort Napier, and at Durban, which was the location of the base hospital for the coastal column.
Assuming that since Warman was only there for July and August 1879 he probably arrived there late June or early July. It is known that on 30 May 1879 Her Majesty’s Troopship “Euphrates” sailed from Portsmouth with, among others, 2 officers and 115 men of the Army Hospital Corps. This group of men arrived at Durban on 3 July. Whether, or not, Warman was part of this group is not confirmed, but does fit the timetable. Additional Information on Warman:
On 3 April 1881 John Warman is listed on the census as married, 29 years of age, Corporal, A.H.C. at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
1891 census has John Marsh Warman listed as married, 39 years of age, Barrack Labourer, at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Wife – Rose, 2 daughters and 1 son.

| Hi POT
Yes he apparently transferred to Netley hospital and then later, as you say he became a labourer there.
I was thinking the same thing, that he obviously did not enter into Zululand, hence no clasp. He served in the Great war in the RAMC and later worked for the Union Castle mail ship company and visited SA often. There are settlers of the same surname, perhaps that is why he visited often.
Thank you so much. |
