| Hi
Does anyone know if Weatherley's Border Horse actually carried its standard in the field?
Thanks a lot |

| Hello Simon, seems unlikely as only 6 of the Border Horse or so survived Hlobane. |

| Hi Stefaan
Despite this, I believe 16 of the Border Horse fought at Kambula (under Dennison), the following day.
The standard is still in existence (or was some years ago) so the chances are it was not lost at Hlobane, so it is unlikey it was carried.
Cheers

| Hi Gary
That's the strange thing, I seem unable to find a decent modern photo of it - the only one I have seen seems to be from 100 years ago....maybe if not stolen its in storage at the museum (though if the British museum is anything to go on - storage & stolen are much the same)
Cheers

| There is a picture of the flag in the book 'Blood on the painted mountain" by Ron Lock. The caption next to it is: The flag of the Border Horse made by the ladies of Pretoria. The unit was virtually annihilated at the battle of Hlobane but must have been reformed to take part in the Sekhukhune campaign eight months later. The flag until recent times was displayed in a Pretoria museum but now it seems t have been lost. This book was first published in 1995 I think. The flag must have been lost in the early nineties of the past centuary. No idea if it has surfaced in the meantime. |

| Yes that's the photo - I've seen it 3 times on the Internet but never another version.
I don't believe all the BH fought at Hlobane ('B' Troop?) - I believe another troop was off elsewhere - its probably these who formed the cadre of a reformed unit.
Think the banner is still MIA.....
Happy Christmas

| Correct Simon, it was B-troop with Weatherley. The regiment had 2 troops each of about 60 men. With the men were 15 officers, giving the corps a total strength of 135. (Source: Book For God, Queen and Colony by Terry Sole) A troop was at the village of Eersteling. And a very good Christmas to you as well! |

| Here’s a link to an article by Huw Jones in the SA Military History Society on the flag including an image.
