Why did major Spalding have to go and look for reinforcements. Could he not have delegated such a task?

He was a Major and CO of the Post.

Bromhead was the CO B 2/24th and Chard was there to 'build a bridge' so it said in the movie - I think, though,  he was there to repair the ponts.

I don't think Spalding had to go, he could've sent a messenger but the 2 coys of the 24th were already late and maybe being highest ranking officer, he thought could hurry them along.

He did know anything was in the air, maybe he fancied a ride out, no convoys were due in and nothing much was going on.
