Hi 90th

I have been reading the British Medal Forum and came across the following thread about the second time this medal was listed.

http://www.britishmedalforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=34301

Looks like we were correct, it was a very good fake.

Quote :
Captain Campbell was Staff Officer to Colonel Wood; he was shot in the head at close range at the battle of Hlobane, charging a Zulu position. Had he survived he would most probably been recommended for the VC. Whether he would have deserved it is another matter (although he was certainly very brave) but he was a particular favourite of Wood's.

Anyone know the story of his brave deed they may have entitled him to the V.C

Hi Mr G

Hope this helps

Captain Campbell embarked for South Africa in November, 1878, and on arriving there was appointed staff officer to Colonel Wood, whose column was at that time in course of formation on the Transvaal frontier, preparatory to the invasion of Zululand. Crossing the Blood River with this force on the 6th of January 1879, Captain Campbell was present throughout its various operations during the two months following, accompanying Colonel Wood, in his capacity of staff officer. On the morning of the 28th of March he took part in the attack on the Zlobane Mountain, and fell, gallantly fighting, in the assault. The following passage, taken from Colonel Wood’s despatch to Lord Chelmsford, describes the manner in which he met his death: “We soon came under fire from an unseen enemy on our right. Ascending more rapidly than most of the Border Horse, who had got off the track, with my staff and escort I passed to the front, and, with half-a-dozen of the Border Horse, when within a hundred feet of the summit, came under a well-directed fire from our front and both flanks, poured in from behind huge boulders and rocks. Mr Lloyd fell mortally wounded at my side, an as Captain Campbell and one of the escort were carrying him on a ledge rather lower, my horse was killed, falling on me. I directed Colonel Weatherly to dislodge one or two Zulus who were causing us most of the loss; but, as his men did not advance rapidly, Captain Campbell and Lieutenant Lysons, and three men of the 90th, jumping over a low wall, ran forward, and charged into a cave, when Captain Campbell, leading in the most determined and gallant manner, was shot dead . . . Mr Lloyd was now dead, and we brought his body, and that of Captain Campbell, about half-way down the hill, where we buried them, still being under fire.” In another of his Despatches Colonel Wood wrote of Captain Campbell: “He was an excellent staff officer, both in the field and as regards office work; and having shown the most brilliant courage, lost his life performing a gallant feat.” Again, in a private letter, bearing date March 29th, Colonel Wood wrote: “I never saw a man play a more heroic part than he did yesterday.”

Hi Mr G

ON March 28, 1879, Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C., in command of the mounted men, taking part in the assault of the Inhlobane Mountain, noticed that much loss was being caused to our men by some Zulus who had taken up a strong position in some caves, from which they commanded the spot where some of our wounded were lying. He therefore ordered their dislodgment.
Some delay taking place in carrying it out, Captain the Honourable Ronald Campbell, Coldstream Guards, with Lieutenant Lysons and Private Edmund Fowler, advanced in a most courageous manner over a mass of fallen boulders and between rocks which led to a cave in which the enemy lay hidden. There being only room for one man to pass at a time, they had to advance in single file, and the first to reach the cave was Captain Campbell. On seeing him the Zulus fired, shooting him dead, upon which Lysons and Fowler sprang forward, and with great gallantry drove them from their stronghold. Afterwards Lysons remained at the cave's mouth while Captain Campbell's body was carried down the hill.

Just out of curiosity / interest. for the same action.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
\"Edmund John Fowler was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in the field of battle during the Zulu War. He was born in Waterford, Ireland in 1861. He was around 18 years old, a private in the 2nd Battalion, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), British Army. The following deed took place, for which he was awarded the VC\"

\"On 28 March 1879 at the Hlobane Mountain, South Africa, Private Fowler, with a captain and a lieutenant (Henry Lysons) dashed forward in advance of the party which had been ordered to dislodge the enemy from a commanding position in natural caves up the mountain. The path was so narrow that they had to advance in single file and the captain who arrived first at the mouth of the cave was instantly killed. The lieutenant and Private Fowler undismayed by the death of their leader, immediately sprang forward and cleared the enemy out of their stronghold. \"

\"He later achieved the rank of Colour-Sergeant. He died in Colchester, Essex, on 26 March 1926. The Victoria Cross is the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Cameronians Regimental Museum (Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland).\"

Lieutenant Lysons was also awarded the VC.

Captain Campbell should have awarded the third posthumous VC. (Mellvill and Coghill got the first two VC\'s to be awarded this way. But that\'s another issue)

Hi all.
Interested to see what other members think about Campbell.
Surely if MELVILL and COGHILL were awarded V.C"S , Campbell
should also be entitled as Fowler and Lysons recieved theirs in the
same action.
cheers 90th.

Before you decide. Read this. Interesting case. Very political. But gives a good overview of how the system fails.

Did this action, have any afffect on the war in general. Or was this a spur of the moment decision, which cost the life of one man. It seems to me, that a lot of VCs awarded during this war, were awarded on the the roll of a dice. (So to say)

Only AZWHS members may view the contents of the Journal.

The December 2009 Journal is now on-line.

Letters of Lt Ronald Campbell - killed on Hlobane mountain.

Quote :
”As members may know, Lt. Campbell was Col. Wood's staff officer when he was killed on Hlobane. Much has been written about Campbell's death and burial, which was supervised by Col. Wood even though the burial party was under Zulu sniper fire.

Mrs Campbell visited the scene a year later accompanied by Empress Eugenie.

Not much is known about Lt Campbell's short time with Col. Wood but his personal diary, which covers the period from his arrival in Zululand until his tragic death, has just been discovered and the Society is now in the process of transcribing the details.

These will be published in the June 2010 Journal. The diary's details will shortly be available to any Society member wishing to research Campbell.

Dr Adrian Greaves.”

I have seen this medal for sale about 3 times on ebay over the past 5-6 years, infact i informed a buyer of this medal a few years back on ebay that i thought it was a fake, the medal did not look right and if i remember his correct medal sold for £17,000 many years ago at one of the big auction houses (spinks?), luckily the buyer was about to pay the $5,000 it realised, he cancelled the transaction, it appeared a few years ago again, i emailed the seller numerous times with no reply, the next thing the medal was withdrawn, so do check before buying, buyers beware!!!!!!!!

Hi All

I agree, he should have received the VC also, but his son,
Brig Gen John Vaughan Campbell VC, CMG, DSO, certainly made up for it.
