| I have just received a CD loaded with the Zulu War Medal Roll 1877-79 the images are very clear. It contains the scanned images of 3,176 pages for the British Army of the original handwritten Zulu War Medal Rolls that are deposited in the National Archives. The pages on this Cd were scanned in Black and White at a resolution 300 (DPI) and presented in PDF format...Class WO100, piece numbers--46, 47, 48, 49, 50...The Cd includes the following---General Officers & Staff, 1st Dragoon Guards, 17th Lancers, Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, Regiments of Foot----3rd, 4th, 13th, 21st, 24th, 57th, 58th, 60th, 80th, 88th, 90th, 91st, 94th, 99th, Royal Navy Ship Rolls, Colonial Corps.
I’m happy to copy the CD to a SD Card and post it on. The intension then is for the person to whom I sent it. To post it on to another member until we all have a copy. You will need to PM your address to the person in order for them to send it on. All you need to do is copy the file on to your desktop.
I will post it on to the first address I receive as a PM.
The file is to big to e-mail. |

| Leprechaun, the CD''s at times can be found on ebay.
The SD Card method above didn't work. It was sent out, never to be seen or heard of again.

| For anyone interested in buying this dvd just be aware that the Rolls are photocopies of the originals so they are difficult to read . I have it , but but I usually use the The Medal Roll book that was put out by Forsyth . I dont think there is a dvd of the Forsyth book where the rolls are all typed neatly ! . Still , its interesting to have and some I assume would want the dvd in its original form . cheers 90th |

| Hello, my name is Juanita, and I am new to this site. I have only just found out that my Great Grandfather fought in the war at Isandhlawana and was called John Joseph Horne, he was a Trumpeter and was apparently responsible for forming the Newcastle Mounted Rifles in 1875. He was one of the fortunate ones to survice escaping with just a bullet hole in his leg. I discovered that the medal he was awarded was sold in auction in December 2014 for £5000, I don't know who sold it or who bought it, it's just such a shame to have found out just 2 days later that this had happened. If anyone knows anything about my great grandfather please, please can you let me know.

| Hello Juanita and welcome. Here is the catalogue entry for your great grandfathers medals sold by DNW in December. It includes a transcript of the local newspaper article about him. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]If you go to the DNW web page you can increase the picture size of the medals and photograph. And this is a copy of the official medal roll for the Newcastle mounted Rifles in the National Archives at Kew which shows Trumpeter Horn. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Best wishes Steve |

| Thank you Steve, I already had the catalogue entry sold by DNW, but the Official Medal Roll I did not, so thank you very much. I never knew anything about him until the 16 th December last year so any news is very welcome. |

The file is to big to e-mail. Hi, There is a family legend that "one of my lot" was killed in the Zulu War,possibly at Isandlwana. For a long time I was under the impression that he was a drummer boy. after doing a lot of researching and reading just about every book I can get hold of about the Zulu War I now think I might have been barking up the wrong tree. I have managed to trace my Great Grandad on the censuses from when he was 7 years old to when he dies. He had a brother called William who I found on a census in 1861 and he was 3 years old. I have also found him on the 1871 census and after that he disappears. I wondered if he was the one that was killed at Isandlwana. If he was he would have been about 19 years old. I know there was someone call William Wilson in N5 Battery Royal Artillery, It might be him, but I am just guessing. (That would make him a Gunner not a Drummer). Since I cannot find anything out about my ancestry unless I spend several days in Carlisle Library, I cannot confirm that the missing relation was not the son of a daughter who had married and taken another name. Sorry about this being long winded. My question is, if you can answer it, is, Was the William Wilson in N5 Battery, RA. born in Penrith? If he was it would at least give me a starting point to continue my research. If you reply on the forum I would also be grateful if you could e-mail me as I am more likely to see it sooner. Thanking you in anticipation of your assistance. Digger. |

| Digger,
Gunner 1626 William Wilson attested on 12th April 1877. He gave his age as 17 years and 10 months.
As you can see the age is about right.
Sorry but that's all the additional information I have to hand.

John Y. Hello John, Thank you for the information. This may be the nearest I have been to discovering who my relation is. If he was born in Penrith I could be on the right track at last. Digger. |

| Lisette Your quite right about the size of his family. He married Susanna Hermina Taljaard and had 10 Children. I do have all the names if would like them. There are quite a number of items in the National Archives concerning the family, in particular Catherine and Patrick Junior. There were two Patrick Juniors by the looks of things, one died in 1911 aged 17 and the other was born in 1913. Hope that helps. |

| Hi Frank, Thank you so much for looking for me, I have an extensive Family Tree including him, his wives and all his children and descendents. I have done dna tests and found his parents and siblings and a wife in Ireland, moved to New Zealand while he was fighting in South Africa!! I’m really interested in looking him up on the Muster Rolls and getting his Military history. I have information of him being sent to Ceylon in the second Boer War in 1900, and his claims for compensation thereafter. He refused to take up arms for the Boers or the British in this war which makes one wonder what terrible things he must have endured in Ulundi in 1879!! I guess my search continues. Regards Lisette |
