From Peter Quantrill.

"The DVD can be obtained from Rob Gerrard. Pen and Sword, UK, are also releasing the DVD in April, 2014"

You realise that the PQ video only has extracts of 'S of S (1918) - about 5-10 minutes B&W footage - although about 40 mins of the original film survives held by KZN Museum in PMB.

cheers Admin/Kenny  Salute 5 or 10 minutes is fine.. i'm sure
anything by PQ is worth the look! i guess my next move in the
new year is to e mail the KZN museum and get into their ribs.
i have always had positive results approaching organizations
directly..but i guess this might be more problematic given the
age of the film, whether the print is stable, and i suppose if
they are able to digitize and then copy..but i will wait and see.

A message from Peter Quantrill!!

"Greetings Peter,

May I take the liberty of responding to the subject, ‘Re: 1918 film on Isandlwana, Symbols of Sacrifice.’

"We have forwarded the original ‘Master’ copy of our DVD, ‘Isandlwana, Zulu Battlefield’ to Pen and Sword, who will be distributing the DVD world-wide for sale in July, so we are informed. The DVD runs for just under an hour and the battle scenes that we added to the video from Symbols of Sacrifice, run for about ten minutes. They include the assembly of the Zulu army at Ulundi, the army on the march and the assault on Isandlwana with the burning of the tents, together with the British crossing the Buffalo en route to Isandlwana. Many of the Zulus who took part in ‘Symbols,’ were recruited from the mines in Johannesburg, and actually participated in the original battle."

As an aside, Pen and Sword have just released two important works, titled:

John Dunn Cetywayo and The Three Generals. Edited by D.C. Moodie, ISBN 9-781783-463244.

Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War by Major The Hon Gerald French D.S.O. first published in 1939, ISBN-9 781783-463237.

Best wishes,

Peter Q.

That's good news, there's quite a few, who would like a copy of that. "Symbols of Sacrifice"

Some more information on the film!

"An important film in the annals of South African cinema, this 47-minute historical drama was made and released in 1918, and is a fine example of silent film, with the story told through text cards. Lord Chelmsford is poised to suppress an uprising in the Zulu kingdom. France’s Prince Imperial, Louis Napoleon, arrives to assist the English in gratitude for Queen Victoria’s amnesty and friendship to his exiled mother, the Empress Eugenie. The local Maxter family is caught up in events when daughter Marie is captured and taken to the Zulu camp. She overhears Schneider and Dabomba planning with the Zulu King Cetswayo to ambush the Prince Imperial. Later Marie sees Schneider hand over the Prince’s sword to Cetswayo. Chelmsford invades and defeats the Zulus at Ulundi, where Schneider dies.
Meanwhile, Marie escapes, helped by farmhand Gabu. The Maxter family is reunited, but news of Gabu’s death mixes sadness with celebration.

John I'm fairly certain what you've posted saying '' more on that film '' has nothing to do with the film ' The Symbol Of Sacrifice ' !
The symbol of Sacrifice from what I can gather ran for over an hour , possibly nearer to two ? . It also featured battle scenes featuring Hlobane among other battles which are covered in the film also . Happy to be corrected !. I dont remember it being portrayed as your summary suggests  scratch
