| For any serious Anglo Zulu War researcher who specialises in the Colonial Volunteers and the native regiments the source book data is sparse to say the least and certainly not in one volume. This has now changed with this publication. In this Terry Sole has gone beyond trusting what the medal rolls list as participants in this in depth work of 20 years research. In each Corps chapter we have in general two distinct sections, firstly we have we have concise historical details of the Corps along with letters and newspaper reports pertaining to that particular unit's involvement in the war, something that will interest all readers of the AZW, and secondly we have a muster roll which Terry has compiled from his research. As the Colonial and Native forces are of paramount interest to myself I must say the Muster Rolls were of particulat interest to me, having revealled both new data and confirmation but not without certain errors, which must say are minimal. So on the plus side what we have is information on the lesser known units such as the Indian Corps, Fairlie's Swazi Police, all Native Mounted Units etc which are only briefly referenced to in other works. There is also some magnificent work on trying to unravel who was in the pre Isandlwana Natal Native Contintent and the Frontier Light Horse (with the inclusion of a never before published Aldershot Roll). Summing up on the positives, this is as advanced to who was actually there as is available a present. On the negative side, well I was disappointed in the biographical details of the men, which were very limited, but as this is my forte so I know how hard it is to collate such details, plus the book would have ended up at a thousand pages. To conclude, this book is for specialists, not the general reader and although on an initial run of of only 350 copies at £45 it is a bit pricey for the average collector.

| Hi 1879graves, Well in answer to your question well I suppose so! (this is a tongue in cheek statement!) I explained this in my conversation with the Moderator. As a bit of background to myself I have been researching the Colonial participants of the AWZ for longer than I care to remember (but greater than half my lifetime). I have collated my research into book form which covers just under 3,500 entries which at worst will give just identify and give a name and medal to those for whom I have compiled a full biography. However like painting the Forth Bridge it has become a never ending task as new facts are always coming to light. As I keep pacifying my wife " It's nearly finished and ready to publish", who knows? If my computer literate daughter has the time to show me I will try to post some samplers in the near future. But when ever possible I will assist any members in any questions I may have the answers to.
Regards

| Never believe, I been looking for this book for a few years. I picked up many of Terry's personal library off of Abes, all signed by the authors to Terry.
I finally found a copy on ebay a few weeks ago and offered them a buyout on the book, they turned it down. I won the book for $5, with tax and shipping it was near $8 total.
I am very happy to have that book in my collection of the Zulu War section in my library.
Very good book to have on this subject.
Terry underlined all the books he had in Morris' Washing of the Spears. |
