I'd hardly call it a slaughter of a '' small '' force ! . Looked to be a wonderful artwork by J.Askew , not to sure of its historical accuracy ?.

Agree with 90th - painting looks superb. Historical accuracy- not too sure .

"Scarpering Nevill Coghill" perhaps?
As always, there are 2 truths: The truth and the Official Truth, as written by the victors.

Officially, NC is a fearless and brave VC winner! End of! (Any other opinion makes one an unpatriotic rebel)

Coghill did actually get across the river and could've scarpered as some suggest , but he didnt , he turned around , and went back into the water to try and save Melvill and the colours , Coghill's horse was shot instantly , which obviously signed both their death warrants ! . Let's also not forget the fact that Coghill had a badly injured knee , and was basically useless on foot , he would've been well aware of that when he decided to go back and help Melvill , one can only imagine what went through his mind when his horse was shot dead immediately he entered the water to assist .
