Units in service Empty
PostSubject: Units in service   Units in service EmptyWed Jan 29, 2014 3:00 pm

My grandfather was a Sapper in the 30th Company, RE. In his recollections of the 1879 Zulu war he listed the following units that the 30th marched with when Chelmsford went to relive Fort Ekowe:

With the 91st, 57th, 3d Battalion of the 60th Rifles, the Naval Brigade, and a due proportion of artillery, we assembled at the Lower Tugela some sixty miles from Durban about the last days of March, 1879. On the 30th of March we crossed the river and marched some 20 miles until we reached the Amatakula River, where we halted for the night.

Afterward, the 30th was transferred to Crealock's column, which my grandfather described as moving up the coast before coming inland toward Ulindi. Based on my review of RE pay records/rosters at Kew, the 30th's moves were:

1879 8 February - Transfer to 30 Co., Chatham
27 February - Depart for Natal aboard HMS Palmyra
7 April - In Natal
1 May - at Lower Ingela, Zululand
1 October - at Pinetown Camp, Natal
31 December - depart Natal onboard HMS Himalaya
