Why is the original book so expensive. The cheapest I have seen is £77.00 some are up in the hundreds.

Simply supply and demand. Price will spiral down when the revised version is published.

Yes they might well do, but only a finite number of the first edition obviously exists, now for real book aficionados, who i know still exist the ist ed will always remain the goal..my copy is not a true ist ed its the revised version, same year, month and publisher, so i treasure it, but look at it askance a bit! how about you Steve? £77 for a true ist ed..bite their hands off lol.

I'm not a purist when it comes to modern 1st editions. Nothing very special about them really, and the new Sheldon Hall sounds to be bigger and better than his first attempt! Rather have a nice victorian tome than a modern first for the same money any day.

Hi Les / Steve I have several 1st Editions and of course many reprints , I agree Steve I'd rather have a Victorian CDV of a soldier or officer from the AZW than a 1st Edition as you said at the same price . Is that part of your library Les ? , impressive ! . Littlehand I can tell you those links you posted show the book at it's now reduced price ! , I remember early this year or late last year there was plenty of discussion on the RDVC Forum about the book , I've seen it for sale for well over a 1,000 GBP's a while ago , well before talk of a new updated / revised version being released . And i forgot to say, i have a few books on Livingstone, mainly like Lion..but they all seem to be aimed at the younger reader, but one by Sir Reginald Coupland is a terrific read and can be had for a lot less than his more ' famous ' work, entitled Livingstones last journey..

Yes that process is so very beautiful.the battle scenes.. Crimea, Traffalger, Guards at el tel kabir. nice to have. put me straight on the scenes if i'm wrong, as that's off the top of my head, also the royal family some famous faces there! with Cambridge.and the kaiser lurking..

The leader of the charge of the light cavalry brigade at the battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War, was James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, Born 16th October 1797, Hambleden, Buckinghamshire, England, died 28th March 1868 aged 70 at Deene Park, Northamptonshire, England.
There was a right stink on who was to blame for this glorious blunder, at first Lucan and Cardigan blamed each other, however, the scapegoat was Captain Nolan, who they said had passed on the order incorrectly.
Lucan was married to one of Cardigans sisters, and Cardigan believed that Lucan did not treat her well, and that is why they were barely on speaking terms.
The bugle that was used to sound the charge into the valley of death, turned up on the antiques roadshow. It was used by Trumpeter Private William Brittain during the action, he was mortally wounded and later taken to the hospital where Florence Nightingale served, he still had the battered bugle with him. The poor chap later died from his wounds and the bugle was given to his family, what a fantastic piece of history that bugle is, I would love that on the wall in my 'Junk Room'

Was this book first published about 2005? If so, it's not all that old is it?
It's about the making of the film I believe, so no doubt it will be a little interesting, but why is it so expensive to get an early edition? Would it not be better to wait and get the updated and revised version, at least it should correct the mistakes that were in the original. Just can't understand why some folk will pay a fortune for a book that is not all that old and must contain some mistakes, better to wait for the cheaper updated/revised one so that the mistakes are corrected.

The gash in the bugle is thought to be where a Russian lance pierced it, god knows what it did to poor Billy Brittain, that could well have made the wound that was fatal to him, but he still had the bugle with him in the hospital, brave lad.
