| On Sunday 18 June 1944, during morning service, The Guards Chapel was hit by a flying bomb. which killed 121 people. The entire building was destroyed except for the apse (the piece of the building over the altar).
There was a memorial to Captain Barton which was destroyed, with the following inscription
ROBERT JOHNSTON BARTON, Lieutenant and Captain Coldstream Guards, born 1849, younest son of Thomas Johnston Barton, Glendalough, Co Wicklow. Killed 28th March 1879, in the attempt to save the life of a wounded brother officer, near Zlobani Mountain, in Zululand. "Post Tenebras Lux"

| Yes, there were AZW memorials in the Old Guards Chapel to Capt the Hon Ronald Campbell, Coldstream Guards and The Hon Hugh Rudolph Gough, Coldstream Guards
in addition to the individual memorials there was actually a stained glass window dedicated to Captains Campbell and Barton. |

The Late Captain Barton
It will be remembered that Captain Barton. Coldstream Guards was one of those killed in the unfortunate and ill planned expedition to the Hlobane Mountain on the 29th March. We understand that one of the Zulus killed at Ulundi was found to have on his uniform and equipments. |
