Photo of "Zulu War Veterans" of the King's Dragoon Guards taken in 1898. I can see five with the medal ribbon (there may be more). May well be the colonel seated in the middle, but no names.

Steve,

I saw that on eBay as well.

Of the group only one officer is a Zulu War veteran, Lieutenant & Quartermaster William Henry Collins. Collins was a Private in 1879, and was present at the skirmish of 5th June 1879 in the Upoko valley, near to eZungeni Hill.

Regards,

JY

Gary,

No idea, their museum at Cardiff Castle might have the answer. Personally I’d opt for the officer who is wearing the cross-belt, marking him as something of a man apart, in much the same way that line regiment Quartermasters wore black belts and sword slings rather than white ones.

Had he been part of the group that captured King Cetshwayo I’m sure it would been mentioned in his entry in Hart’s. There is a link to that though, Marter’s son should be in the group, he died in the 2nd Boer War.

JY
