The following was posted on the British Military Medals Collector's Group on Facebook. Hi everyone. I have little or no knowledge on medals. I bought a home in 1980 that had a trunk in the attic. Amongst the treasures saved in that trunk was a medal from the previous owner that had passed away in 1970. The medal is from South Africa dated 1879 and the inscription around the edge is 2236 Pte J. WIXON 2/4TH FOOT.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]I have checked and he is listed on the Medal Roll with 1879 Clasp. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]You never know what you might find.

FYI, Pte Jabez Wixon was discharged from the Army on 18 Mar 1880 as unfit for further service and returned to his original occupation as a joiner. Whilst not a 100% certain, looks as if he may have married in 1881 and died in 1891 aged 34 in Wolverhampton. What was the name of the previous owner of your house? Regards. John Fone.

Hi John Fone. Welcome to the forum. The information you require will have to come from The British Military Medals Collector's Group on Facebook. The owner of the medal, posted in the above group the following "I bought the home of a builder that immigrated here to Canada. He built the home in 1930, died in 1970 and I bought it in 1980 from the lawyers for his widow. She went into care then and has since died. I’m certain the medal was his fathers."To find out more, you will need to contact her on facebook.

Very happy to contact the owner but the BMMCG is apparently a "closed" group on Facebook. Do you know her name ? Kind regards John Fone.

The lady sold the medal through e-medals who are based in Canada. They do a variety of online auctions and retail stock. I have dealt with them in the past and they are very good.

"Jabez Wixon was born in 1856 in Wombridge, Wellington, Salop, England. He signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (2236) for General Service with the 11th Brigade, 4th Regiment of Foot on November 2, 1878 in Manchester, England, at the age of 22 years and 8 months, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married, that his religion was Church of England and that his trade was that of Joiner. He had been recruited by Sergeant William Tilton, Pensioner on the Recruiting Staff on October 31st. Private Wixon was transferred to Fort Widley in Portsmouth on the 6th and would service with both the 1st and 2nd Battalions. He was discharged from active service on March 18, 1880, credited with having served one year and 137 days (November 2, 1878 to March 18, 1880) at Netley. It was noted in his records that "his conduct has been good. He is not in possession of any good conduct badges" and that he was "not in possession of a school certificate". It also states that he was "Never Wounded".
