The detail on the photograph is superb in my opinion, if you look closely at the Sergeant front right on the ground, you can actually see the red embroided 3 the battalion’s designation.

which has a least three of the same NCO’s in it. A copy of that photograph is also held in Royal Collection.

Two officers seated centre front row?

Steve,

No they are senior non-commissioned officers, they wore a patrol jacket similar to that of an officer but of a slightly inferior quality. At that period of time in the Rifle Regiments, the Sergeant-Major; the Quartermaster-Sergeant and the Drum-Major would have worn the braided patrol jacket. You will note that other Staff Sergeants are wearing unbraided patrol jackets.

If you look at the photograph from The Rifles Museum, the Sergeant-Major is armed with a pistol and Staff Sergeants’ sword.

Right - I wondered because I couldn't see any sleeve insignia.

PS When my daughter bought her house in Farnborough we found, in the unbelievably overgrown garden, two iron trestles exactly like those holding up the wooden boards of the back row.

Here’s close-up of the patrol jackets:

You will note the simple embellishments on the cuffs, whereas the officers would have worn Austrian knots. Officers would have also worn a cross belt and back pouch. When I did the close-up, I realised I had neglected to include the Sergeant Instructor of Musketry as a Staff Sergeant who is on the right in the photograph.
