| I know of three photographs of Chard in civilian dress (one is in Isandula's collection and another in JY's I think). Does anyone know the dates of the photos please?

| Steve, This carte-de-visite predates 1879, photographed in the studio of John Hawke, 8, George Street, Plymouth. It was used by many of the illustrated newspapers as an engraving to show Chard’s image. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Lieutenant J. R. M. Chard, V. C., R. E. | Thanks Les, I wasn't thinking of that one so that makes four. Thanks JY, that's very useful. Any thoughts about this one? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Steve |

| Steve,
It might be hard to believe but that is not an actual photograph. That is a charcoal and pencil drawing of him held at the R. E. Museum.
Look carefully at the texture of the jacket and the button. I thought you had an eye trained for such things?

| Only with my glasses on! It's very good, any idea of date?
PS And was it reproduced elsewhere at the time? Steve |

| Steve,
I’ll try and find the museum’s exhibits list I have, hopefully that might have further information on it.
I have been checking their online collection, but to no avail.
I’m sure I have a photograph of the drawing on file somewhere.

| Well isn't that odd! I would never have noticed the missing handkerchief. So far as I can see the photos are otherwise identical. The fact that it is annotated as "Major Chard" puts the annotation at least after RD - the CDV could of course be earlier. I note that the copy in the royal collection is also sans handkerchief.

| Hi All, There is a picture of Chard dressed in a kimono and in a Rickshaw whilst in Singapore. This picture was in a Newspaper or Magazine sorry i cannot remember the name, but the actual Glass Photographic Plate was broken in Transit. Rai KLH |
