Hi,

My Great Grandfather Joseph Thomas Chapman (1860-1927) is listed in Harts Army Annual 1904 as serving in the Zulu war of 1879 and was awarded the South Africa Medal. I do know that according to Harts and TNA records, during WW1 he commanded Newhaven Fort, Fort Burgoyne (Dover), Rudgley and Cannock Chase as Major of No1 Depot RGA. He also served in Tilbury, Cork, Tynemouth and India with the RA.

What I am having difficulty with is finding the regiment that he fought with during the 1979 Zulu war and regimental number. I have consulted Harts 1879 Zulu War Annual but of course that only lists officers, which I know he wasn't being only 19 at this time. Which records should I consult next? For some reason I think I have read somewhere that he was involved in the Battle of Ulundi.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Regards,
John Harrop.

Hi John

The Medal role shows 3915 Corporal Joseph Chapman, Royal Artillery, was awarded the SA Medal and fought against the Zulus. It was awarded at Secunderabad on 14/6/81. Sounds like your man.

Regards
Steve

That's great, many thanks for your help Steve. Saved me many hours trying to find the correct records to consult.

Kind regards,
John.
