Captain Newham-Davis served with the Carrington Horse (afterwards the 1st squadron mounted infantry) in the Kafir war of 1878, and commanded a detachment of mounted infantry in the operations under Colonel Lanyon against the rebels in teh Langeberg, being present at the affair at Gobetsch heights. Served with Wood's Flying Column in the Zulu War of 1879 in command of a troop of mounted infantry, and was present at the taking of Siray's hill and in the engagement at Ulundi (Medal with Clasp)
