hi mons14.
Well done , great post . I"m going out on a limb here , but I"m fairly sure SGT THOMAS . COOPER is related
to the well known zulu war author / historian ..... Ian Knight . Happy to be corrected but I"m sure Cooper is
related to an author. If Ian Knight see"s this post he may contact pete and either confirm or deny .
cheers 90th.

Excellent. Mr greaves has wanted to know what medals were held at Brecon. I believe he e-mail Martin Everett (Curator) but was told for security reasons, he could not say. (Sour Grapes)

I also cant understand why this is a security issue? How can knowing their names be an issue; you can make an argument that knowledge of how many medals they have as a security issue....BUT the medals are freely visible and open to the public! So that doesn't wash?

Anyway -

I got the above list from a collector friend who actually viewed the collection (if you look hard you can see a name card with each that shows his name). I've always wanted to know the names on the medals too, as living in Canada the chances of me seeing this collection in the flesh anytime soon is sadly slim to none. So glad to know!

And yes, I understand that Sjt. Thomas Cooper is indeed a relation to Ian Knight the historian/author.

Enjoy the photo!

David

At last we have them. Mons14 Thanks very much. Like you I did not quite understand the security issue thing, but I supposed Martin as a job to do.

For Mr Greaves

Ian was born in Sussex, in the UK. A boyhood visit to the feature-film Zulu first around his interest in the Anglo-Zulu War, and this intensified into serious research when he discovered that a member of his family – Sergeant Thomas Cooper, 1/24th – had been killed at the battle of Isandlwana.

PostSubject: Re: Isandlwana casualty medals at Brecon   Isandlwana casualty medals at Brecon EmptyThu Dec 03, 2009 9:43 pm

Indeed, Knight, now one of the world's foremost experts on the 19th-century Zulu kingdom and the Anglo-Zulu wars of 1879, had been fascinated with Zulu history since he was a small boy and saw the 1964 movie "Zulu," about the wars. As a teenager Knight discovered that he had a family connection to the battle -- a distant relative, Sergeant Thomas Cooper of the 1st Battalion of the 24th Regiment, had died fighting for the British at Isandlwana.

Ian Knight says

"The more I got interested in this period, the more it seemed to me that I wasn't, as a British person in the 1960s and 1970s, really learning anything about it," Knight says. "We were getting only the Victorian British perspective on it all, and I wanted to start looking at the Zulu side of things, to try and get some idea of what the war meant to them and how they prosecuted it."

Well it paid off.

James,

It's probably better you didnt find Slade in there, as you'd never have a chance at getting it in the future.

Keep your chin up mate, old Slade will show up one day.
