| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Free Press (Wexford) - Saturday 01 July 1905 SAGS medal roll Civil Surgeon F.J. Roberts no clasp Mentioned p368 M+S no further details and n/t of his brother. Surely Frederick should have the 1879 clasp if at Ulundi and can't find a Norman Roberts wounded during the battle. |

| Kate,
Captain George Norman Roberts, Royal Cork City Artillery, appointed as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion [sic. Regiment], Natal Native Contingent vide District Order No. 9, dated 26th April 1879.
The 2nd Regiment N.N.C. fought at the Battle of Ulundi, under the command of H. M. Bengough, 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment.
No trace of any wound sustained by Roberts in action, two officers of 2nd Regiment, N.N.C. were slightly wounded. One of those being Henry Timson Lukin, a very well-known name in South African military history.
His brother was Dr. Frederick Joshua Roberts, who as you say had the medal with no clasp, which rather precludes him from being present at Ulundi.

| A little more on George Norman Roberts’ volunteer service in the Royal Cork City Artillery:
10th June 1874 commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant (Supernumerary).
19th December 1876 London Gazette retrospectively announces his commission to Lieutenant be ante-dated to 10th June 1874.
24th July 1878 promoted to Captain.
9th June 1880 resigns his commission.
