I was really pleased to see the brief mention of Gunner Arthur Howard RA -Rorkes Drift.. could you identify which part of the cemetery the unmarked grave is located in and any supplimentary information about his army career? Secondly does anyone have information about a Lt Henry Valentine ( NNC) died Fort( sic) Pearson -May 1879 - also on family headstone in Brockley & Ladywell Cemetery? Regards Mike Guilfoyle

I will start looking for information on Lt Henry Valentine. Will post any information I find.

Hair - Brown
Any Distinctive marks - None
Religious denomination - Church of England

Service in South Africa from 9th Jan 1878 - 8th Nov 1879.

Should read Herbert Valentine Jay Natal Native Contingent, B.1855 D,15 May 1879, Buried Fort Pearson Military Cemetery son of James I Jay of Lewisham.
I was at the cemetery looking for Gunner Howard when we rediscovered the family memorial to Herbert about 10 years ago.
