Burial: Fort Napier Cemetery, Pietermaritzberg, South Africa. He married FRANCES CATHERINE TRANCHELL Sep 15, 1854. She was born 1834, and died 1888.

Notes for ANTHONY WILLIAM DURNFORD: "When the Crimean War broke out in September 1854, Durnford volunteered for action but was not accepted. However, when the war dragged on he was eventually transferred to Malta as an intermediate posting in the case of his services being needed in the Crimea. Much to his disappointment, he did not see active service either in the Crimean War or Sepoy Mutiny which broke out in 1857. Instead, he remained in Malta for two years serving as an adjutant before being transferred in February 1858 to England."

Malta Family Records: DURNFORD, born 5th January 1857, a daughter to the wife of Anthony William Durnford, Royal Engineers
Edward William DURNFORD, died 16th July 1856, aged 33 years. Born 19th June 1823. Only son and heir of Frances Catherine and Lieutenant Anthony William Durnford, Royal Engineers. THIS DOESN'T MATCH. The South African Military History Society, Military History Journal - Vol. 6 No 5: "An infant son born in Ceylon had died in Malta; a daughter born in Malta in 1857 had survived, but another daughter born in England in 1859 had died the following year." Without giving a name it mentions that a son was born to the couple in Ceylon and died in Malta in infancy. What may have happened is that the date of birth was not in Malta but Ceylon and there may be a notation error as to the date of birth. Since the couple were married Sept. 15, 1854 the child may have been born June 19, 1855 and died July 16, 1856.

That indefatigable researcher Jan Barnes of Auckland wrote to me in May: About the Durnfords and Barbara Brabazon.

Anthony's grandfather, father and brother seemed to be right into mistresses and bigamy.
Two older sons of Anthony William Durnford are not specifically described as being Barbara Brabazon's children. They were born shortly before the divorce was granted. John Moore divorced Barbara about 1805 so that he could remarry, so presumably she had already had the two children by Anthony out of wedlock.

Descendants of Barbara Brabazon
Barbara BRABAZON, born 24 JUL 1769,(daughter of William BRABAZON and Catharine GIFFORD) married John MOORE, 24 MAY 1788, divorced cir 1805. She married
Anthony William DURNFORD.
Children by John MOORE:
i. Charles Henry MOORE.
ii. William John (Rev) MOORE BRABAZON. Succeeded to his mother's estates. Assumed the additional name of Brabazon. d.s.p.
iii. John Arthur MOORE BRABAZON, born 1791.
Children by Anthony William DURNFORD:
iv. Edward Wiliam (General) DURNFORD, born 22 OCT 1803,died 30 JAN 1889.[5]
v. George Anthony DURNFORD, born 18 SEP 1804,[6] a Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel of the 27th Regiment Died 1856 unmarried.
vi. Arthur Gifford DURNFORD, christened 19 FEB 1809
Kearsley's Arms of Peers.
Private bill to House of Lords by John Moore to dissolve his marriage to Barbara Moore so that he could remarry, 1805. House of Lords Office HL/PO/PB/1/1805/45a3n335.
