In 1920 Brigadier-General H G Mainwaring wrote a book, A soldier's Shikar trips, of his game shooting exhibitions. It mentions the Zulu war only in passing (pages 17-23). The book can be read on-line.

Weldone Anne. Excellent work! Some nice comments there. I'm fairly certain more information will surface.

Anne There are many more photographs of HGM and sketches by undertaken in AZW in the regimental museum at Brecon. National Army Museum often are touchy about using the Fripp painting without a reference to them (just put a credit to them underneath). There is an account in the archives by HGM on a return visit to RD in early 1900s. Of course there is the bear he shot in India in the Officers' Mess. Museums are much more enthralling than websites!

True! But is the distance one may have to travel is an obstacle. So websites have a purpose. Certainly gave Anne her requirements. Well done Anne! |

You can never really understand history unless you have visited the spot where it has been made. Allahabad and church 'St David's' where Bromhead's funeral service was held; standing the same quay steps where Putin stood yesterday at Sevastopol; visiting the remains of Fort Warwick in the Eastern Cape where Wardell and his company were based; being on the beach were 6 VCs were awarded before breakfast; and seeing de Neuville's RD painting - after travelling you come back a different person I am not sure that this is equally true from just visiting a website.

Thanks for the map Pete. The good thing about these maps of the time is that they show how prominent the Dongas were, even back then and this helps us now when trying to piece together the movements of various individuals and units during the battle. Kate
