| Frederic Vincent Godfrey Bird was a Captain of the Portsmouth Division of the Royal Marines Light Infantry in 1879. He served in the combined marine battalion from Portsmouth, Chatham and Plymouth who were sent to South Africa under the command of Lieutenant Colonel R.W.B. Hunt. They were transported aboard HMS Jumna to Cape Town, South Africa, where they were halted before being sent back to England. Due to the fact that they did not get to Natal they were not entitled to the South Africa Medal; but they could claim that they had "served in the Battalion of Royal Marines sent to South Africa for special service in the Zulu War, 1879."
F.V. Godfrey Bird was the brother of Lieutenant Harold Godfrey Bird who served aboard HMS Tenedos during the Zulu War.

| Rai a little Bird told me where to look. There are few RMLI men buried there, just to the left of the Church main entrance. Took all of 20 mins to find him. |
