| "Thomas Scott was born on 6 July 1846 at Quatt, Shropshire [enlistment papers give Somersetshire], and enlisted for the 24th Foot at Birmingham on 5 July 1864, aged 18 years. He was promoted to Corporal on 18 November 1868; Sergeant, 18 September 1869; Colour-Sergeant, 24 March 1871; Sergeant-Major, 30 December 1883. He served in South Africa from 1 February 1878 to 13 January 1880, and took part in the Kaffir War of 1877-78 and the Zulu War of 1879. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in October 1882, this would have been surrendered upon being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with £10 annuity on 21 January 1899. He applied for an increase in his annuity on 6 October 1906, and was informed that a note had been made of his request ‘but that annuities of more than £10 are now very rarely conferred."
