Sep 1867 Sub-Lieutenant on HMS Mutine (Sloop, Pacific)

14 Aug 1869 Sub-Lieutenant on HMS Sirius (Sloop, Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa)

4 Apr 1870 Promoted to Lieutenant

24 Apr 1871 Lieutenant on HMS Seagull (Gun Vessel, Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa) Lieutenant, in charge of boats of "Seagull" in the Expedition to Elmina, 13th June, 1873, landed ashore and was in charge of a company of the naval brigade. (Ashantee Medal).

19 Sep 1883 Commander on HMS Valiant (Coast Guard Service, Bantry) In Sep 1884 Marrack was in command of the ship, during the absence of the Captain, when HMS Wasp was lost after running ashore on the rocks at Tory Island. Valiant picked up the six survivors from Tory Island.
