From the 27th March 2010 through to the 11th April Tenterden Museum in Kent, will be exhibiting over 200 recently acquired rare Zulu artefacts, many seized from the Zulu king and his chiefs, following his capture by the British in 1879. The exhibition will consist of Zulu beadwork, ornaments and necklaces, knobkerries, carved sticks, assegais, axes and drug artefacts, together with numerous British army artefacts recovered following the Zulu War. A number of original oil paintings depicting the Zulu War will also be displayed.

Hi S.D. I don't think it is at the Tenterden Museum. I do believe it was there for a short while. Adrian Greaves was the person who manage to save the medal and brought in back to england.

I can highly recommend a visit to this Museum. The Zulu War display is far more than I expected. I met Mr David Payne who kindly showed me around explaining in great detail various background information to certain items within the collection. The highlight for me apart from meeting Dr Adrian Greaves and David Payne, was holding the last message sent from Pulleine on that day back in 1879. (See Photograph)

I met up with Dr Adrian Greaves later on. We spent time discussing his project in South Africa. He and David Payne are returning to South Africa in a few weeks to over see another project they have been undertaking, with a school close to Rorkes Drift, which as 200 pupils. Before Dr Adrian Greaves and David Payne intervened the school had no electricity even though there was electricity supply just meters away. Thanks to the effort made by Dr Adrian Greaves and David Payne the school now has electricity. (More on this at a later date)

Unfortunally time was not on our side, but I have been invited back to the Museum, which is an invitation I will be taking up. I was also lucky enough to obtain a signed copy of Harford (The Writings, Photographs and Sketches) By David & Emma Payne. Edited by Dr Adrian Greaves.

PS. I will also post the story of how by Dr Adrian Greaves managed to secure Curling’s Campaign medal (A really wonderful story)

Pete. Looks like you had a great day out. I take it that was the original message and not a replica. It’s a shame we couldn’t have arrange a meet at the museum, but it’s to far away. I would have liked to have met Dr Adrian Greaves. Can’t wait to hear the story relating to Curling’s Medal.

Cecil Rhodes had negotiated concessions with the King of the Matabele, Lobengula who was later, as a result of disagreement over these concessions, driven out of his own land by Rhodes

Admin. Thanks for the great photo's. It must have felt good to hold the last message from Pulliene knowing what we do about the battle. Do you know if the display will ever go on tour throughout the UK. Or could you find out on your next visit.

With Refrence to the Ingxotha, there is only four in existence. One of which is in the Adrian Greaves collection.

Pete. The story relating to Lodengula’s axe would it be connected to the two envoys send to England. The axe was supposed to be given to Queen Victoria as a gift.

Hi David,
I attended the 2010 exhibition. Will there be anything different to see this year, or is it basically the same exhibition?
Thanks
