For ten hours Pte. Caleb Wood and members of B Company, 2nd Battalian, 24th Regiment, stood behind the mealie-bag baricades defending he mission station at Rorke's Drift against repeated Zulu attacks. Those attacks were fiercest during the hours of darkness when Wood and a handful of comrades held one section of the line which the Zulus charged time and again: the redcoats greeted each charge with a volley, then met the warriers at the baricades, driving them back with 'cold steel'.

Limited Edition. Only 500 made exclusively for ModelZone.

For those that are interested in these models. They can be purchased at the National Army Museum.

I noticed an action man type doll dressed up as 2/24th looked like Sean Connery on e-bay selling for £99.99p
The National Army Museum were selling the exact same item for £39.99p

It worth checking the N.A.M when it comes to buying this sort of thing, including books. Some of the proceeds go back to the Museum, which is always worth while.

As this particular figure was made exclusively for Model Zone it won't be available at NAM, but it can be obtained from Model Zone in Nottingham, (0115 - 941 4892).

Bookworm not sure where you got your information from. But they are sold at NAM.along with a lot of other models of the defenders. SD you would not be wasting you time as you put it.

CTSG It could be that Bookworm collects models, and just maybe he has inquired as to where they can be brought. And NAM is not a place where they are sold.

CTSG, if you scroll down on the link that pete posted, you'll see that they are advertised as 'exclusive to Model Zone'. I rang them this morning and ordered mine. I think you'll find that exclusive means no-one else has this particular model. Perhaps other 24th figures are available at N.A.M. but not this one.

Bookworm. Do you know if they are going to create anymore models of the other defenders or is Caleb Wood just a one off. As It would be nice to have the whole set.

If you get anymore information regarding these models can you let us know. If any members purchase the Caleb Wood model, can they let us know what they think of the quality.

Good afternoon lads,

The model has just arrived by courier, very well packed, quite a bit larger and heavier than expected (approx 8. 1/2 cms high, 11. 1/2 cms wide), excellent quality. No markings on base indicating it is Caleb Wood. The only indication of that is on the certificate.
(actual markings on base: 2008 W. Britain. WBZW 42/43/44)

Personal opinion: Well pleased, worth every penny.

Cheers

Bookworm would you be able to post the company address on the forum for those interested in purchasing this Model or any future Models.
Glad to see it met your expectations. Did the certificate have an issue number, as there were only 500 made?

Hi Pete,

The issue number on mine is 365. As for the address, I got mine from Model Zone in Nottingham, but they have branches all over the place, a mate of mine was looking at this model in the branch in Sussex recently. I'd recommend you Google Model Zone and find the nearest supplier to your home town (save postage & package).

Thanks for the link Bookworm. I thought it would be smaller. I don't suppose you are in a position to take a photo, so we can see the detail a bit better than whats on e-bay.

The Model Zone Store. I wonder why they chose one of the not so well defenders to base their first model on. Private Caleb Wood. With all due respect, who was he apart from one of the defenders at Rorkes Drift, I don’t recall him being awarded the VC.

CTSG I think your playing with a hornets nest with your last post.
I think your find this forum was mainly set-up to deal with everyone involved in the AZW not just those that were awarded the VC.
I’m not teaching you how to suck eggs, but I would either edit your last post or P/M Admin to delete it.
Your other posts have been quite interesting and debatable. Would be good to keep it that way.
Just my opinion…

CTSG

I think it would be fair to say that without the support of the "nobody specials" those 11 men would not have been awarded the VC, since they had to be alive to receive it, and would, without the help of these other defenders, have been over-run and suffered the same fate as their comrades at Isandlwana. Is it not time therefore to salute them all rather than just cherry picking the VCs all the time?

When all is said and done, they were ALL there and ALL faced the same enemy. Personally I'm not eliteist, I think they all deserve recognition.

CTSG Made reference to the model purchased by bookworm as being sold in N.A.M. I had a look at the N.A.M on line shop, and come across this model. Which might have confused the issue..

Hi 24th,

Yes you're right, he's got a rip in his trousers, one of the mealie bags is split and mealie corn spilling out, he's got a "7 o'clock shadow" on his chin, (today its called designer stubble).

Every time you look there is some small detail that you've missed before. But if you have a look at the warriors left knee, he's even got either dust or powder from the mealie bags on it, thats how detailed it is. As I said, I'm well pleased with it.

Cheers

CTSG I do apologise. I can see that it would have been an easy mistake to make. But I agree they certainly are detailed. Well lucky you Bookworm. I bet you have put it , in the pride of place in the house. And the photo’s aren’t that bad either.

Hi SD & CTSG,

It looks somewhat better than the promotion pictures too, if you look closely at those, the black foam packing has been left in situ between Caleb Wood and the wall. But the detail really is amazing. Pride of place, not exactly at the moment, I keep changing my mind on where its going to be put. I think this might be something I need to think about over a large brandy (just to help the little grey cell you understand).

HI Bookworm
I have just joined the site and came across Cold Steel love the Model Of Caleb Wood and glad the other soldiers on the wall get recognition all that gets mentioned most of the time are the VC's am i right in thinking there was a grave rededication for three chaps in the same grave yard
As an ex squaddie i'am quite interested in the Zulu War.
I must say not an expert on the subject though .

Hi Billy,

Welcome to the forum, I don't think it was set up with 'experts' in mind, so don't worry about it. We're all just a bunch friendly souls who want to learn more about this particular little war.

There was a rededication service at Ruddington, in fact there were two, one was 2004 and the other was last year. As I understand it, when the first one was held for Tongue and Wood, nobody was aware that Marshall was in the same cemetery, so a sperate service was held four years later for him.

With regard to the model of Wood, as far as I know he is the only man who was a non-VC or DCM, to have a model such as this, personally I hope there will be many more to come. As Littlehand said "that would be a collection worth having".

Cheers

BookwormI was wondering if the designer of the model, was related to Caleb Wood. As it’s the only model of a defender that has not won the VC-DCM. Does it say on the box or certificate the name of the designer.
