Hi 24th.
1st Btn . E. Lancs didnt fight in the zulu war , it came into being after 1881. The actual forerunner of the E. Lancs was
the 30th Regt who also didnt take part in the zulu war . One person from the 30th Regt took part in the zulu war and it
wasnt Heynes , so we are still non the wiser as to which Regt he was actually in during the AZW.
Cheers 90th.

I agree with 1879Graves the then 2nd Lt Carleton Haynes of the 30th didn't take part in the Zulu War, he appears to have been in Dover for some of the time.

There was a Lt Charles Haynes in the RE, who took part in the relief of Eshowe, he subsequently served in the Transvaal. I wonder if whoever compiled the source that Littlehand has tapped into has confused the two men?

Littlehand,

That has been taken word-for-word from the 1891 Hart's Army List which is available on-line.

We might have to backtrack and see if the same appears in prior volumes of the same work.

There is another Haynes who fits the bill of Zulu & 1st Boer War that is Paymaster Edward Court Haynes, 3rd 60th Rifles.

I have found the 1883 Hart's online see link below.

Lt. Haynes is only mentioned to have served in the Afghan War.

Gent's I don't doubt your skills in providing information regarding campaign medals of the Anglo Zulu War. However may I ask that you check again, as the company selling this medal are very un-likely to provide incorrect information.

Admin. Could this topic be moved to the didn't they or did they section until confirmation either way has been established. After all we would not like the chap in-question to go down on history as not serving in the Zulu war if in fact he did. A terrible injustice.

Littlehand,

You can't take for Gospel what the auction house has to say, I imagine they searched the 1891 Hart's and came up with the answer. What they really need to do is search the National Archives at Kew, which would give the officer's service record.

Could this be one of the same scratch Highlighted in yellow

Officers of the Royal Engineers 1879: Who's Who
Two field companies of the Engineers (the 2nd and the 5th) embarked for South Africa on December 2nd, 1878, and landed at Durban on January 4th, 1879, for the reinforcement of the Corps in South Africa. This had previously only consisted of the 7th Company, commanded by Major F W Nixon, who had under him Lieutenants, F H MacDowel and J Clarke.

Colonel A W Durnford, assisted by Captain A H Hime, who was at the time Colonial Engineer, had organised and equipped three Companies of Native Pioneers. These each consisted of a Captain and 2 Subalterns (European), and 4 Sergeants and 96 Sappers (African). In each company 25 men were armed with the Martini-Henry rifle, the remainder bearing assegais and shields. Each man also carried a tool slung. The equipment of tools, forges, dynamite, etc, was loaded in two-wheeled ox-carts. The officers were employed in the Colonial Engineers department.

When the expeditionary force was organised, Colonel Durnford took command of the entire Natal Native Contingent, consisting of three battalions of 1,000 men each, with 450 mounted men and a rocket battery under Captain Russell RA. From long residence in the area and from having command of similar contingents during previous outbreaks, Colonel Durnford had acquired great influence over the indigenous peoples of Natal and Basutoland, and it was felt that no-one else was so well qualified to lead this auxiliary force.

Colonel F N Hassard was Commanding Royal Engineer, and Lieutenant J C Baxter was Adjutant. The other officers and companies were divided amongst the three columns which were intended to penetrate into the district from different points.

Colonel E Wood commanded that which was to start from Utrecht; with him was Major C J Moysey.

Colonel Glyn's column was to start from Helpmakaar and Rorke's Drift; with him was the 5th Field Company Royal Engineers, with Captain W P Jones, Lieutenants J R M Chard, R Da C Porter, and C E Commeline, also two Companies of Native Pioneers commanded by Lieutenant F H MacDowel.

A third column, under Colonel Pearson, was to cross the Thukela river near its mouth. With him was the 2nd Field Company with Captain W R C Wynne, Lieutenants D C Courtney, H B Willock, and C E Haynes; also one Company of Native Pioneers under Lieutenant T R Main. Lieutenants V J Yorke and Brice were appointed Assistant Engineers and took charge of the bridge equipment for crossing the Thukela. Lieutenant General Lord Chelmsford was in Command of the combined force.

Impi,

No 'fraid not, I've ready mentioned him in one of my above posts.

His name was Charles Edward Haynes, he took part in the advance towards Ulundi, but was in Fort Nolela at the time of the Battle of Ulundi.

Hi All

Charles Edward Haynes was born on 8 July 1855. He was first commissioned, entering the Royal Engineers, on 28 January 1875. Served as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Company R.E. in the Zulu campaign of 1879, serving at the relief of Etshowe. He was the officer who effected the communications with Pearson’s force at Etshowe by means of heliostats. Haynes accompanied the 2nd Company in the march from the southern to the northern columns, and in the advance on Ulundi. For his services he was twice mentioned in despatches.
