Hi All

This Memorial / Grave is located in Utrecht Old cemetery and was to the 4th Regiment.

Does anyone know or can read the inscription below?

If it was erected by the 4th Kings Own to fallen comrades in the Zulu War, isn't there a way to check a casualty list to get an idea of the names on the memorial ? A few surnames can be made out, but using the aforementioned list would assist greatly in deciphering the rest. Idea

I've been checking John Young's They Fell Like Stones and the net, trying to find a casualty list for the 4th King's Own, but with no luck. Even if these men were seconded to another regiment, I.M.I. or Special Service Officers, they'd still be listed as from the 4th King's Own in records wouldn't they ? scratch

I think it says 1899 not 1879, as they were apparently at the relief of Ladysmith during the Boer War.

24th, that's what puzzles me Suspect If we could find the casualty list for that regiment from the Boer War 1899, to compare with the names on the memorial, then we'd be able to clarify this part. Otherwise, there must be a Zulu War casualty roll existing that includes their names. scratch

I'm mistaken. I've just found 2 names on page 214 of John's book, K.I.A. 8th September 1879 - Sergeant-Major E. Smith and Corporal I. Pomfret. I'll look over the book again.

The following three 2/4th Regiment soldiers are listed in the medal roll as having 'Died on Service';

Pte. B. Halliday (died Grey Town 16th March 1879 - also listed as Pte. H. Halli?)
Pte. W. Hunt (died Pietermaritzburg 16th April 1879)
Pte. P. Murphy (died Utrecht 8th March 1879)

Seems strange that Sergeant Major Smith & Cpl. Pomfret are not listed in the same roll as having died, bearing in mind they were officially KIA.

Regards,

Tim

I should have added this regarding Smith & Pomfret's deaths in John's book - 'During a skirmish with Manyayoba kaMaqondo's forces, the Tafelberg Stronghold'.

Smith and Pomfrett lie buried in the Luneburg Lutheran Church graveyard and have therefor not been mentioned on the Utrecht memorial. This was covered under another thread on the forum, where mention was made that they should be considered as the last casualties of the Zulu War! Photo of memorial shown in that thread.
