| A great opportunity missed it by the Zulu or the battle of the White Umvolosi.
The 3 rd July,a reconnaissance in force was under-taken at 1 P.M.by Lieutenant-Colonel Buller and the mounted men of the flying column.
Sending a portion of his forces by the ford of the wagons track,Buller with the main body crossed at a another ford lower down, and moved against the southern hill overlooking the river between these two fords.
This hill ,wich had been occupied by zulu skirmishers, was promptly evacuated ,and when Buller's party emerged from the bush bordering the left bank of the river,a number of zulus were seen hastening over the open country in front.
These were pursued to a distance of nearly 4830 m from the Umvolosi ,when Buller's party suddenly came under a heavy fire from a impi of 5000 warriors who were concealed in the valley of the 'Mbilane stream...
Number of the enemy also apparead on both flanks of the reconnoitring party ,pushing bodly forward with the object of encercling them and cutting off their retreat...
Alas in this attempt they were unsucceessful, and Buller ultimately withdrew his party, having loss 3 men killed and 4 wounded.
The retreat was covered by the mounted men who had been left on the hill mentioned above and by two 9-prs.and some infantry which had been sent out from the camp ,but which had not crossed the river...
Can you imagine the thing, if it had succeeded ...
It seems that Buller was unwise of the same kind Durnford ...
Cheers
Pascal
I guess in this battle, the Zulu have had about 10% loss |

| Hi Pascal . Again this has been covered on here somewhere , It was Buller who realised in time that it was a trap and halted his force before they had gone to far and would have been surrounded and massacred . I hardly think Buller was unwise and I dont think Durnford was either except he decided to take the rocket battery with him . cheers 90th. |

| Hi Pascal . I admire your passion , but we all have Our own opinons on what we think . Its pointless asking so many questions if you have set ideas in your own mind . As nothing will make you change your way of thinking . Many of your questions are well covered and as you can see you wont have many people answering your posts because of them being covered previously . It may be better if you spent more of your time reading the '' Old Posts '' instead of posting your questions . That way many of your questions will be answered . . I'm only trying to help you . Cheers 90th. |
