PostSubject: Zulu War Exhibition Anglo Zulu war Society 17th 18th October 2011   Zulu War Exhibition Anglo Zulu war Society 17th 18th October 2011 EmptySun Sep 18, 2011 7:20 pm

Firstly, I would like to say on behalf of this forum a big Thank you to the following for making this weekend one to remember for years to come.

Mr David Payne for his planning and organisation of this event.

To Dr Adrian Greaves and Ian Knight for their captivating talks on the Battle Of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift.

And to all the new friends i made during this exhibition weekend.

A special thank you to Mr Payne’s Family for extending the most warmest hospitality to all those that attended, and for the unexpected full English Breakfast This morning, which was welcomed with open arms after the freezing night under canvas! That being Old Historian, and myself who moaned, regardless of the sown in groundsheet. It was most unfortunate that the tent we used seemed much bigger at home than it did when erected at the exhibition. The length of the camp beds were a foot bigger than the tent, so it was a case of trying to sleep with the door open, but we survived the night!!

.
One or two problems occurred over this weekend mainly one being, I was unable to take or record the amount of footage I wanted to, because there was just too much and my SD cards were not able to cope with the amount. But I will post what I managed to capture, hopefully this will give an overview of what was on offer at this remarkable weekend. Hopefully some other members who attended will post their reviews and photos.

For remaining at my post under canvas in sub-zero temperatures.

I was granted the honour By Dr Adrian Greaves to drink from a silver Goblet engraved with the following.

Presented To The Officers Mess 1st Batt: 24th Reg
On Promotion. By Lieut: Teignmouth Melville
Dec 2nd 1868

And believe me it really was an honour and privilege.

Posted with the kind permission of Ian Knight.

During the whole of the Exhibition David's Daughter Emma was videoing the event with far superior recorders than i had. Once the recordings have been edited i will hopefully get a copy. This section can then be up-date. I hope you enjoy what has been posted so far.

Just an observation. Who supplied the camping equipment? Who didn't check the equipment before going into the field? I was just a victim of circumstances. Infact David’s good wife had a spare room, which would have done me nice. But Pete (Admin) reminded me a good officer never willingly divides his forces in enemy territory, I did point out their was no enemy just friendly natives.

Anyway apart from that, it really was a great weekend. The best I have had for years. Good Company, Good food, lots of laughs and an excellent collection of Zulu War artefacts more than expected. Ian Knight and Dr Adrian Greaves both gave excellent talks as Pete said. “Captivating” One of the best parts was Saturday night where myself, Pete, David and Ian talked until the early hours in David’s lounge.

David’s family made the whole event that much more enjoy able. Certainly hope there is a repeat next year.

And by the way if you ever passing the “Raja of Kent” have a meal. The best Indian food I have ever tasted, the staff were professional and friendly.

And of course thanks to Pete form creating this forum, which allows us to stay in touch with events such as these.

Old H. Was you amazed by the sown in ground sheet. Still no use if the doors left open. :lol!:

Looks like it was a great weekend. Weldone to all concerned. Great Photo's.

Hi Pete - Photos to the rescue! Moriarty's sword - the best artefact there for me. Some other pictures included of a great weekend (including one of our Smith-Dorrien stop off, from Newcastle to Tenderten). Cheers - Steve & Jeff.

In the photo, I’m holding a miniature copy of a rifle carved by a Zulu Warrior. When pulled apart its shows a spearhead concealed within.

Hi Admin

With regards to the Appledore Grave question, issue or mystery (Harry Johnson)

To answer your question as to him listed as KIA at Isandlwana. Well yes and no !

Let me explain.

I have him on my database as killed, as Private 1774 H. Johnson, 1st 24th.
The medal roll has him listed as killed, as Private 1774 H. Johnston, 1st 24th.

In my opinion after reading the medal roll and the census for many years,
It is more than likely that Harry Johnson could not read or write and they listed his name as Johnston as it sounded the same, It would not have been corrected if he could not read.

The grave that you photographed is a family grave.
George was his father.
Amy was his mother.
Elizabeth was his sister.
His father George claimed his effects and medal.
As both his parents were alive on Harry's death and the first burial was their daughter Elizabeth, they would have wanted to put him on the grave as well to his memory.
I see that there is also a Anne listed below Elizabeth, Anne was also his sister. I cannot see her death date from the photo.

I hope the above makes sense.

Good to see the event went well. A good array of artefacts from both sides. Admin. That certainly was some honour you had there. The photo's and videos posted, give a good overview of the event. Well done to all concerned.

It is worth mentioning that the photograph showing Pulleine's 8.05 order framed is a pre-1992 (at the very latest) colour photocopy or photograph, NOT the original, which resides in Brecon.

Hi DB14. Yes chard is correct. However David Paynes daughter had better luck with the filming than me. It was said at the exhibition that a DVD would be available at some point. Might be worth dropping David a P.M.
