After the book of JY, p. 190, the number of men of the six companies of the 94 th at Ulundi, it's 17 officers + 616 ORs. (Small difference) And all these men were not in these companies ...

Nobody owns other versions of the number of men of the 94 th at Ulundi, by chance ?
Or even the actual exact number of men of one of these six companies?
Cheers

| Pascal,
I have long said that They Fell Like Stones needs a revision, and have always admitted that in its published form it is not without errors or omissions.
As far as the 94th Regiment go at Ulundi you can add Captain George Russel Salvin BOWLBY; Lieutenant Robert Gordon WOLRIDGE-GORDON to their list making 19 officers, if you add 2nd Lieutenant Lewis Loyd NICOL, from 4th Battalion, The Rifle Brigade, you arrive at 20. One officer short of what Richard Glyn records, it was his report that Rothwell used.
Once again you have lost me, can you explain your remark: And all these men were not in these companies ...
See War and Peace in South Africa 1879-1881, by Dr. Paul H. Butterfield for Anstruther's comments about the companies' strength of the 94th at Ulundi.

| Today we all went across ie, all that is left of us-2 companies of the 21st; 4 of the 58th and all of my regiment besides Woods weak regiments, the 13th, 80th and 90th. a few ....... and the 17th lancers & basutos. i dont think in all we can have been 3,000 infantry, but it was quite enough. I hope you mark the distribution of the 94th, of the 4 regiments with us the 24th were left in the camp; the 21st have been broken up in forts all the way and the 58th have lost 5 companies in the same way. we have never been touched. Anstruther, pascal as you know battalion strength is 1000 men, usually works out at 800ish. company strength is 100 men but usually works out at 80ish. cheers xhosa |

| John
Thank you and congratulations to all these valuable information!
By" And all these men were not in these companies ..."
I mean ,that in a battalion, all the officers, NCO's and soldiers are not all incorporated in the companies of the battalion ...
I say this, because the goal for me was to find the real effective, in combat, of one of a company of this battalion at Ulundi...

| Bravo mon Lester for the video, this is the kind of deployment used the January 22 ,1879 by the British imperial infantry of Pearson?
After the 1877 regulations ...
At the battle of Inyezane the british imperiale infantry companies are in skirmish order or in close order on two ranks ?
There were 33 imperial infantry companies at the Battle of Ulundi, the theoretical strength of a company is 110 Officers, NCo's and soldiers, but it never reaches, in no battles...
Cheers
