January is mid summer so the grass would have been greener and a bit longer.

Thank you.

This was before the area was on the tourist map. If I remember the locals were grazing their cattle on the lower slopes and they probably chopped down the trees for firewood so keeping the area in check.

The back of the mountain down to the stream is now a mass of vegetation. And the road and carpark now intrudes on the saddle.
Times dont change, the erosion on the back of the saddle is pretty much where it was in 1879.
Nice shots Rob.

Brilliant photo's . Just one question, why didn't they make for the high ground before the Zulu's got into the camp. With regards to the 4th photo from bottom.

Hi Rob

Splendid pictures, many thanks for sharing them.

I would dearly love to go to S.A. and visit some of these places, I dare say that the first time you visit a place like this, it would be a very solemn moment, the occasion would bring a big lump in the throat, and cause the eyes to well up, or maybe that's just me.

Martin.

PostSubject: Re: Isandlwana pictures taken April 1985   Isandlwana pictures taken April 1985 EmptySat Feb 18, 2012 9:23 am

The visit was something my mother and grandmother had always wanted to do but poor roads prevented.

Personally I found the place very depressing and filled with sadness. Perhaps this may be linked to the fact that I had a personal connectiom there,

I grew up on the African veld and was used to the vibrant sounds of the veld and the constant sound of bird and insect life. This was absent here. The only sound was the gentle moan of wind in the grass and one could hear the distant sounds of the villages to the East. It was a very disturbing experience and one that I remember vividly and also one I wasn't keen to repeat at the time.

Having a lot more knowledge of the Battle and overcome the solemness of this visit I am keen to visit again when I am next in country.

Rob, everything is spooky in this battle, the shape of the mountain, the eclipse during the battle ...
There must be lost souls at night on the battlefield ...

Cheers
