found this in THE NOBLE 24TH by NORMAN HOLME.

ALABASTER. E. 1321 PRIVATE.
SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL with clasp.... 1877-78-79.
if he had been anywhere of note , im sure it would be mentioned.

Very interesting map on the link to web-site Fig. 2 (right). Route taken by 24th Regiment in December 1878 Show the railway.
