Kings South Africa Medal with Clasps , ' South Africa 1901 ' , and South Africa 1902 . Foreign Languages - French . Served in the Kaffir War of 78 including the campaigns of 78 & 79 against Chief Sekukuni . He was present in the assault which captured the Chief's stronghold in 79 . He took part in the Bechuanaland Expedition under the command of Sir Charles Warren 84 - 85 , being in command of a troop of the 3rd Mtd Rifles , Diamond Field Horse . Herbert was employed with the Egyptian Army from March 5th 94 - March 4th 96 . In Dec 1900 he was placed in command of the 1st Btn Sth Staffordshire Regt and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State April - May 1900 , Operations in the Orange River Colony May - Nov 29th 1900 , including the actions at Wittebergen July 1 - 29th and the Transvaal during July 1901 , in the operations in the Orange River Colony Nov 30th 1900 - May 31st 1902 . He was mentioned in despatches , London Gazette Sep 10th 1901 . For his services in Sth Africa during the Boer War , Herbert was awarded the Companion of the order of the Bath . He died at his home at 2 Grimestone Gardens , Folkestone . The Principal Mourners were Lady Raitt ( Widow ) , Miss Margaret Raitt ( Daughter ), and Mr & Mrs N.H.V. Gigill ( Son in Law & Daughter ) , Colonel F.J. Raitt ( Brother ) and Colonel & Mrs A.G. Haig ( Brother in Law & Sister in Law ).
