A talented man.
Shows that the army not only is, but has always been a meritocracy, where no matter how humble one's beginnings, a man (or woman) can make as much of themselves as their talent will take them.

Hi Littlehand

Now this one is a good one, there is a possibility that he might have been in the Zulu War, let me explain.

On the medal roll, he is listed as having the medal but with No clasp.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

So we now know he did not cross into Zululand.

Now we need to have a look at his service record.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

From his Service Record, we can see that he left the Army in February 1879.

Without checking the Pay & Muster Rolls (Which I do not have access to), it is too close to call as to whether we can say that he took part in the Zulu War or not.

If he received the SA 1877 - 89 medal with no clasp, we can infer he "took part" in the war, but was unlikely to have seen action, since those not awardeed the clasp did not cross onto the hostile side of the Buffalo river.

Hi Admin & Littlehand

Admin
The link that you posted was under GENEALOGY and had moved off Sweeny somewhat.

Littlehand
You were asking a question under this thread, so you were correct in posting it. Salute

Hi 90th

There are two Sweeney's listed on the 2nd 3rd Medal Roll.

1248 Bandmaster R. Sweeney
45/467 Private D. Sweeney.

The article link & Littlehands article are talking about 1248 Bandmaster R. Sweeney.

Salute
