"Private Joseph Bathe, There is also an obituary entitled "Fought in Zulu War, Swindon Veteran's Death", which describes the funeral of Private Richard Bathe, who served throughout the Zulu War and later in Bermuda and in the Boer War. Private Bathe died aged 92 on the 27th July 1953 and was the senior veteran of the Regiment at this time."

1919 Private Joseph Bathe, 99th Regiment, served in the Zulu War, confirmed on the medal roll. He was entitled to the South Africa Medal with clasp “1879.” After the Zulu War he was still serving with the Regiment in Bermuda when the medal roll for the 99th was prepared in September 1880.

The following is from the “The Wardrobe, Home of the Infantry Regiments of Berkshire and Wiltshire”

http://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/research/the-collection/search/subcategory:/name:Bathe

“There is also a typed letter from the Curator of The Regimental Museum to Mrs. L. Bathe regarding Private Joseph Bathe, whose documents have been donated to the Museum dated 7th April 1972. There are two Parchment Certificates of Character belonging to Private J Bathe, who was described as very good, dated 24th November 1888 and 26th May 1890. There are two Certificates of Discharge for J. Bathe, who attested at Devizes on 29th July 1898; the documents are dated 26th July 1890 and 26th July 1894. There is also a Parchment Reserve Certificate for J. Bathe, who was transferred to the Army Reserve in consequence of the completion of his Army Service, dated 24th November 1888.”

The same site also has his medal, which is listed as:

“99th Regiment - South Africa Medal 1834-1853 with 1879 Clasp awarded to J Bathe”
