In a family album, probably some time in the 1870's. Anyone we should recognise?

Steve,

That’s the 2nd Battalion early 1870’s, the falling horsehair plume is the giveaway.

The officer with a number of medals Lt.-Colonel Thomas Maunsell. There were two officers with the 2nd Battalion who would serve in the 1st Battalion in 1879: Gilbert and England. I did post a photograph that includes England at Staff College on the forum recently, it is possible that England’s Staff College course clashes with the time-frame of your photograph.

There is a photograph of Gilbert, albeit heavily bearded in Barthorp’s Zulu War work.

Nice photograph!

Thanks John. Bit of detective work required to identify the ownership of the album. No name appears, but this is their coat of arms and it looks very much as though the family seat was "Cottesmore" at Haverfordwest. Possibly also an RA connection with a shot of Woolwich.

Steve,

I think the photograph was taken in Kilkenny, Ireland.

There’s a Field Rank officer with three medal ribbons on his patrol jacket, bareheaded, seventh in from the left of the photograph, I think that might be Major Robert Montgomery.

The officer in Mounted Order is wearing a mourning band, I take that is for family member as he is the only one.

The motto is that of the Clan Douglas, it might worth checking marriages into the clan.

Another photo in the album. Coincidence I am sure, but it is Brecon.

PS  Look at the officer seated middle row far right in the original post. Cannot be Smith Dorrien I know, but a spitting image or what!
